Having been first-choice for most of his time at Coventry City, Jake Bidwell’s opportunities for playing time at the club now look to be limited as he enters the last year of his contract. A steady performer, a slight loss of pace in recent months has seen him look more exposed defensively without the benefit of being an attacking threat. Jay Dasilva’s strong form in the same position has quickly seen Bidwell relegated to what looks like a firm position on the bench, however, he could still have a role to play as either a defensive substitute or in case of injury. Having players around the squad who can reliably come in for a certain level of performance is handy to have, which looks to be Bidwell’s role for this season.

For much of Jake Bidwell’s time at the club, it has been his sturdiness at left-back that has made him the first-choice. Bidwell provided a nice balance to allow more enterprising team-mates to do their thing, rarely getting beaten by opposing wingers and occasionally getting forward to put in decent deliveries. That was why he was handed a new contract early into Frank Lampard’s time at the club, however, it appears a slight loss of pace and also a change in what is expected at full-back has hampered Bidwell’s effectiveness. With opponents starting to find it easier to beat him, Bidwell’s limited attacking contribution has made it relatively painless to drop him.

The main positive for Jake Bidwell this season has been the lack of trust Frank Lampard appears to have in new signing, Miguel Angel Brau, which has afforded Bidwell minutes he might otherwise have struggled to get as third-choice at left-back. Bidwell’s greater experience and defensive qualities seem to make him more valuable as a substitute/alternative to Jay Dasilva while Brau has yet to show much reliability in his performances. That means that Jake Bidwell still has a role to play for Coventry City for the time being, even if it’s clear that his days at the club are numbered.
