A player who has had to constantly battle for his place during his time at the club, Jake Bidwell is a valuable member of the squad who has stepped up to make some valuable contribution since signing in 2022. One of only two players currently on the books who are over the age of 30, Bidwell is someone that Mark Robins turns to when he is looking for a guaranteed level of performance. While the manager’s long-term vision for this team probably doesn’t involve Jake Bidwell, over the course of this current campaign, having someone of his experience and trustworthiness can be invaluable.

Jake Bidwell is seen by many as a left-back who is there primarily for his defensive qualities. While Bidwell is a solid defender he is probably more attack-minded full-back than he is perceived to be. Bidwell’s attacking instincts are less visible because he isn’t someone who is capable of beating opponents for either pace or skill, however, he often looks to stretch play on the left side by timing his runs from full-back to act as an outlet for the team. That can act as a useful option to catch teams napping down that side, however, it also can leave the left side open if the pass into Bidwell isn’t quite right. For that reason, Bidwell is someone who has to rely on his teammates in order to impact games.

As a 31 year-old left-back who isn’t necessarily first-choice, it is fine that Jake Bidwell isn’t a game-changer in his own right. Having consistent, trustworthy players who can be trusted enough to come into the side and deliver a certain level of performance can be valuable over the course of the season. Entering the final year of his contract at Coventry City, it is more likely than not that this will be Bidwell’s final season with the club. As someone who has helped keep the establish the club in the division and been part of two Wembley visits, Jake Bidwell has done more than what was expected of him when he signed and still has a role to play in the here and now.

I really liked how he won his place in the team back in the 23/24 season having been almost ever present in the previous season. He has a lot of good qualities but is overshadowed by how strong MVE is on the opposite flank.
