Signed as the natural successor to Tom Bayliss, it has been clear as to why that line of comparison has been drawn in Zain Westbrooke’s first season at the club. A technically-adroit midfielder who can drive forward with the ball and pick a pass, Westbrooke is perhaps less explosive than Bayliss but is similarly capable of being a central-midfield playmaker. The difficulty for Westbrooke in his first season at the club has simply been because Bayliss remained at the club when most were expecting him to leave.

Whether Bayliss stays or goes, Westbrooke is going to have to work hard to ensure himself a first-team place this coming season. With Jordan Shipley having demonstrated his ability to operate the ‘Tom Bayliss role’ in central midfield towards the end of last season, Westbrooke’s pathway to first-team football has been further blocked. Nonetheless, he is a talented player with the potential to become a good footballer at League One level. There is perhaps a decision for Mark Robins to make on whether to loan him out to allow him to build up important first-team experience or he will develop quicker as part of the first-team squad.
