Coventry City have been short on depth in wide areas this season, with only two natural wingers in the squad, making the addition of another option in that position a sensible first January move. The addition of Yang Min-hyeok is intended to add depth to Coventry’s attacking options, with the young winger having already had two loan spells in the Championship in the 12 months he’s been in English football. Having achieved reasonable success with Queens Park Rangers last season and Portsmouth this time out, Yang has shown he can impact games at this level. Whether the Korean truly moves the needle for the Sky Blues is the keen area of debate around his addition.
Yang Min-hyeok has shown in spells at Queens Park Rangers and Portsmouth that he has match-winning moments in his locker, although he has struggled to find consistency and the physical intensity to truly impose himself on games in the Championship. A hard-working player, who will get involved in the defensive responsibilities of a wide player. Yang prefers his right foot but can play off either wing, to provide cover for either Tatsuhiro Sakamoto or Ephron Mason-Clark. Yang has great shooting technique and can carry the ball well when presented with space, however, his slight physicality has seen him struggle to display the full extent of his dribbling ability in the Championship, which is why he fell out of favour at Portsmouth.
To go from struggling to get into a team fighting for survival to one vying for promotion is a big step up, highlighting that Yang Min-hyeok is being signed to improve the bench rather than the starting XI. Yang’s role will be to come in for the last 20-30 minutes of matches and add a fresh burst of energy to the attack, providing Frank Lampard with an option that’s not been available since Brandon Thomas-Asante got injured. While the benefit to such an addition is that it doesn’t threaten the current balance of the team, the worry is that Yang might be a little too raw to make an impact if he’s put in a position through injuries or form of other players to deliver in big moments.
