Victor Torp is clearly a player of immense technique, yet there remains a sense that something is holding him back in producing what he’s truly capable on a consistent basis. From that scintillating initial impact, to several performances this season where he has scored or created goals that have won games for Coventry City, if Victor Torp can be harnessed to his highest level of ability week-in, week-out, he is possibly a cut above Championship level. The frustration is that games so often seem to pass him by and whether that is down to something the player or coaching staff are missing, or simply because Torp’s highest level is not a true reflection of his ability, continues to be a riddle.
When Victor Torp is at his best, his ability to manipulate and strike a ball is pretty much unparalleled with the rest of this team. Whether it’s in hitting dead-balls, pinging passes or getting shots off on goal, the way Torp can connects with the ball is very sweet, close to special. Yet it seems that it is only once every three or four games that Torp uses that ability to positively affect the game. In between those moments, he is someone who can end up on the periphery of games, seeming to lack the athletic capacity to buy himself time on the ball in threatening areas. It also hasn’t helped that he has rarely been trusted to start a run of games, unable to benefit from being able to play himself into a rhythm.
The form of Jack Rudoni this season probably hasn’t helped Victor Torp benefit from having his role in the team tailored to his abilities, with the Dane often forced to play in a deeper role in midfield that he would prefer. After 50 games for the club, however, it is getting to the point where Torp should be asking himself what he is doing to force himself into the key position in this team that he clearly has the talent to possess. The occasional stand-out performance aside, it feels as if Torp is in danger of letting his time at Coventry City pass him by.
