Tony Andreu’s last season was cruelly ended by a serious injury sustained in September. Agonisingly for the fans, Andreu had shown glimpses of being the kind of creative, attack-minded midfielder who could make the other disparate parts of the side function. Andreu’s return to fitness this season adds an exciting option to our attacking ranks, but we have to temper that excitement with the sentiment that it’s very difficult for players – especially over the age of 30 – to hit the ground running after such a long-term injury as the one Tony Andreu suffered.
Additionally, there is a question over where Tony Andreu fits into the side now that Mark Robins appears to have settled into a 4-4-2 formation where the strike pairing of Marc McNulty and Maxime Biamou is so important. There isn’t a role for an orthodox number 10 in the side currently, while the emergences of Tom Bayliss and Jordan Shipley, along with the return to fitness of Jodi Jones reduce the wide options, and Liam Kelly and Michael Doyle are established in a deeper central role. Even before the new signings, it’s going to be difficult for Andreu to carve a role for himself in the side this season, which puts less pressure on him to hit the ground running but also makes it harder for him to build up a head of steam.
