It took a while for Tom Davies to be recognised for what he’s good at last year, but once he was, he became something of a fans’ favourite. As our most physical centre-back, Davies became an important player towards the back-end of last season as Mark Robins looked to steady the team following the defeats to Yeovil and Lincoln. This year, Davies has remained third-choice centre-back due to the form of Dominic Hyam, but remains an important member of the squad nonetheless.

Whether Davies is of the standard to be a regular in a League One side remains to be seen. He’s very much a ‘head it, kick it’ kind of centre-back, but at times, that sort of defender can be needed when the team is lacking in confidence and needs to keep it tight at the back for a couple of games. That Davies was plucked from well down the pecking order at Portsmouth to become such a useful player for us is one of several useful pieces of recruitment from last year that looked to have paid off.
