The back-up full-back, a role in the squad that you hope you can cover with youth players or senior players playing out of position but can become problematic if such players are forced to play an extended spell. Tennai Watson has been signed as a result of a fairly serious injury to Josh Pask – a centre-back ear-marked as right-back cover – and the lack of under-23 players coming through in either full-back position. With no emergency loan window to fall back on, Watson is a signing we’ve had to make to avoid leaving ourselves short if we suffer injuries and suspensions at full-back.
Watson himself has three Championship substitute appearances under his belt with parent club Reading and an underwhelming loan stint last year with AFC Wimbledon. He is someone who appears unlikely to trouble Fankaty Dabo’s starting place were he to come in for the odd game but is not going to be completely out of his depth at League One level. In an ideal world, this is a signing Mark Robins wouldn’t have made, but circumstances have forced his hand – particularly with Dabo picking up yellow cards at a rate of knots. He may not play, he may only play a couple of games, it’s better than being left to play someone out of position.
