Another promising young centre-back on the club’s books, Morgan Williams saw his status as the closest under-23 player in his position to breaking into the side taken by Declan Drysdale. It would have been frustrating for the youngster after he had previously put in a solid performance on his debut back in March 2019, but it is another demonstration of the stiff competition for places that Mark Robins has implemented during his time at the club that pretty much no-one in the squad is assured of their status in the side.
The reason Morgan Williams dropped down the pecking order slightly last season is less to do with how he has played for the first-team when called upon and more to do with the change in the style of football we’ve seen over the past year or so. Williams appears to base himself as a defender on his physical strength and reading of the game, but is not as composed with the ball at his feet as Declan Drysdale is, which is why the latter was preferred when there was an opening in the defence back in November. Nonetheless, Williams has proven that he is capable of holding his own at League One level and looks to have a bright career ahead of him.
Whether that is with Coventry City is starting to look unlikely when you factor in the club’s promotion to the Championship and that there are two players ahead of Williams in Josh Pask and Declan Drysdale before you get to the first-choice players in central defence. Williams is probably looking to find a good loan move this season to further prove his credentials in the professional game.
