If not the most, then one of, the most reliable performers in the team, Milan van Ewijk has quietly reached new heights of quality and importance under Frank Lampard that has made him utterly essential to the way Coventry City play. The long throws are the headline but it is the reliability of his touch and the pace he provides both defensively and going forward that make Van Ewijk one of the key cogs in this Sky Blue machine. That the club was able to hold firm in looking to command an adequate fee for the player over the summer that suitors balked at is very much Coventry’s gain and could underpin this season’s promotion bid.
Aside from a somewhat tricky spell when he initially arrived, Milan van Ewijk has been a high quality and consistent performer over his 100 league appearances for Coventry City. It was his pace that eased the move to a back four in his first season at the club and last year, Van Ewijk added a missing element of end product to his attacking play. He has kept up both the defensive and attacking qualities to his game, along with that general reliability in being able to receive the ball in any situation and keep play progressing that is essential for a possession-based team. On top of that, Frank Lampard has really looked to harness Milan van Ewijk’s long throws, which have gone from a desperate and ineffective last throw of the dice to an utterly central and effective tenet to the team’s attacking play.
Having looked set to leave over the summer as he approaches the last 18 months of his contract in January, the hard line taken in demanding a big fee for his services has really benefited Coventry City this season. Along with Matt Grimes, Milan van Ewijk is the team’s most important and reliable performer, players upon whom a promotion challenge has been built. Coventry will know that their only chance of keeping Van Ewijk at the club any longer than next summer will be contingent on this promotion bid being successful.
