The good thing about doing these updated profiles is that it allows me the chance to re-assess players at different stages of their careers with the club. After 10 league games, McNulty had scored just once, and quite frankly, didn’t really look like scoring too many more. It wasn’t just that he was snatching at chances that fell his way, but he was rarely getting into positions to score – never a good sign for a striker. 15 further league appearances and 11 goals later, Marc McNulty could well be set for a 20-goal season.
The improvements in McNulty’s game have been multi-faceted – he’s getting in better positions, more often, he’s running the channels with aggression, he’s taking shots on that he would never have thought about earlier in the season – and yet, he still doesn’t feel like the most clinical of finishers. However, given the other improvements in his game, he’s increasing his chances of scoring because he’s doing more to get shots in on goal. Moreover, the increased confidence that the goals have given him have allowed him to develop a quicker speed of thought around the penalty area, which is not only leading to more chances for himself, but leading to assists – such as recently against MK Dons and Cambridge. It’s been a remarkable turnaround for McNulty over the past couple of months, long may it last.
