The vacant spot in the squad for a centre-back has been filled with the addition of Luke Woolfenden. A player with over 200 league appearances under his belt, the former Ipswich Town man fulfils the criteria of adding some experience to the back-line, having been a mainstay of a promotion-winning side the last time he played at Championship level. Whether Woolfenden provides an upgrade to a back-line that has been shaky over the last few seasons is a matter of debate but he at least looks to be a signing that improves the team’s overall defensive options.
A centre-back who prides himself on his ball-playing ability, Luke Woolfenden will likely be competing with Bobby Thomas for his spot as the right-sider of the central defensive duo. The benefit that Woolfenden brings to the team is as another quality passer on the ball from defence, which could balance Coventry City’s progression of the ball from the back nicely, with Liam Kitching on the left and Matt Grimes dropping in between the two centre-backs. If the hope is that Woolfenden will be some ultra-physical and vocal leader of the defence to correct the lack of such qualities in recent seasons, that is an unrealistic expectation of the player. In addition, Woolfenden isn’t blessed with pace so may be as susceptible to balls over the top as the current central defensive options are.
Luke Woolfenden alone will not be the solution to Coventry City’s wobbliness at the back, but that was never something that would be solved via the addition of just one player. Woolfenden should at least see the team move from having just two senior centre-backs that the manager trusts up to three, which provides healthy competition for Bobby Thomas and Liam Kitching’s starting places, as well as the ability to move to a back three as and when needed. Luke Woolfenden is a solid addition to the squad, if not the transformative one that had been hoped for.
