The first proper addition to the squad following promotion to the Premier League, Loum Tchaouna looks a relatively raw talent that the club are hoping will come good having already had a year of top-flight experience under his belt with Burnley last year. The French youth international has had a strong record in age-group football but is yet to really make a splash in the senior game. A few stand-out moments for Burnley in the Premier League last season shows the promise with Tchaouna but he is someone who looks to have plenty to work on in order to be the kind of impactful difference-maker the team will need to pick up points this coming campaign.
In terms of his playing style, Loum Tchaouna looks to be someone who wants to move inside from wide areas, operate in tight spaces, and produce moments of individual quality. The winger has the potential to provide something out of nothing, with his goal against Leeds United last October the kind of inspired genius that Coventry City will be hoping that he can be taught to produce more consistently. As something of a flair player coming into a team that will be second-favourites in just about every game in this coming season, the concern with Tchaouna tactically is that he is not coming into the kind of situation that suits his style of play. That isn’t to say it won’t be useful to have a potential difference-maker as part of a suite of wide options.
The question that needs to be asked about every signing that Coventry City make this year is whether it will leave the team in a better position heading into next season. Loum Tchaouna is a signing that could really go either way. The lack of a track record at senior-level and his somewhat maverick style of play means he could be someone who offers the team very little, to the point that he’s excluded in the big pressure games. At 22 years old and with flashes of brilliance to his game, there is a lot of upside if Frank Lampard and the coaching staff can find the right role and environment for him. It is a surprise to see the club pay the reported level of fee on Tchaouna on what looks to be a punt, but that may be more reflective on the increased spending power that comes with Premier League football.
