From being a transfer that the club really pushed the boat out for, to being close to a forgotten man for the first half of last season, to now being one of the first names on the team-sheet, Liam Kitching has had quite the ride at Coventry City. The centre-back has undoubtedly benefitted from the trust and consistency of selection that Frank Lampard has provided him over the past 12 months, which has helped iron out some of the impulsiveness in his game. An increasingly reliable performer, Liam Kitching is producing some classy moments in a Coventry shirt while also being able to perform the meat and potatoes elements of defending at Championship level with little sweat.
Liam Kitching is a defender who wants to both be really aggressive in the challenge and produce telling moments with the ball. For much of his Coventry City career, that had manifested into over-committing himself in challenges, making clumsy errors or playing passes that weren’t on. Any good performance often came with an underlying sense that disaster was around the corner as soon as Kitching allowed his concentration to drop. For much of this season, however, Kitching has looked far more switched-on throughout games and, as a result, more authoritative and capable of producing the highs he’s can attain on a more consistent basis. Liam Kitching has gone from being unreliable to one of the team’s most trustworthy performers.
When a team is playing well, it makes everyone involved look good. The challenge for Liam Kitching will be taking what he has learned to help Coventry City into this excellent position and transferring that into being able to perform when others around him are struggling to. Those recent memories of his poor judgment/ability to control his emotions engender a fear that Kitching could revert into his previous self when the chips are down. However, if he can translate his current form into a full season or two, the level of investment the club made into bring Liam Kitching in will look like incredible business.
