Position: Attacking Midfielder/Winger
At Club Since: January 2018 (On Loan From Reading)
Total Club League Appearances (Goals): 6(0)*
As has been typical under Mark Robins, we’ve started our transfer activity early in bringing in Josh Barrett on loan from Reading. With just three first-team appearances under his belt, it’s fair to say that Barrett is something of an unknown quantity until he makes his first-team debut, but his goalscoring record from midfield with Reading’s under-23 side offers hope that he can supplement our attacking threat in this Jodi Jones and Tony Andreu-less world that we’ve been subjected to.
From the little I’ve seen of him (a.k.a. YouTube) Barrett looks to be more in the mould of Tony Andreu than he does of Jodi Jones. He appears to have been deployed as more of a central attacking player than a winger, and he appears to be someone who likes to link the play and bring the ball into the final third than someone who can take players on and beat them for skill or pace. How his qualities affect the squad dynamic remain to be seen – what with Duckens Nazon’s future far from certain, at the time of writing – and there’s always the caution with young loan signings that no matter how talented they are, their mental maturity – that ability to adapt to competing against senior pros while living away from home – will likely be the biggest factor in whether they’re a success. It’s a gamble of a signing, but it appears to be a somewhat educated one given his form this season with Reading’s under-23s.
