Having briefly broken into the first-team two seasons ago, Jordon Thompson’s progress at Coventry City has been stifled by the recruitment of both Morgan Williams and Declan Drysdale for the under-23 side who have seemingly become more highly-rated. However, Thompson does have an advantage over the duo, having greater experience of football both with the first-team here and during three non-league loan spells with Barrow, Boreham Wood and Wrexham.
A tall, calm and versatile defender, Thompson’s brief run in the first-team at Coventry City came at right-back, where he looked reasonably solid despite playing out of position. Perhaps because of the progress of Williams and Drysdale, Thompson has subsequently had to play a lot of football with the under-23 side away from his favoured position, and was also played regularly at right wing-back during his recent loan spell at Wrexham. It can’t help a young footballer to be played out of position so regularly, although if it has allowed him to play first-team football as a result then it perhaps expands his career opportunities.
Had the club not progressed so rapidly over the past few years, Jordon Thompson might have been much closer to the first-team picture than he is currently. As it stands, it seems likelier that the youngster will have to begin to consider his options elsewhere as he looks to get his career started in earnest.
