Jonson Clarke-Harris had underwhelmed in his initial loan move to the club in January but did just about enough to earn a permanent stay. However, heading into this season, the striker looked to be some way down the pecking order, which made the decision to bring him in permanently look questionable. A couple of months into the season though, Clarke-Harris has been the striker who has taken his chance to nail down a starting spot in the side, while most of his rivals for a place have struggled to convince, or even appear to have put in much of an effort.
Clarke-Harris is someone with a lot of raw attributes that should make him a good centre-forward – he’s strong, has a decent turn of pace, a good touch, a powerful shot – but has struggled to figure out what he excels in. Since the arrival of Conor Chaplin and the injury to Maxime Biamou, Jonson Clarke-Harris’ role in the side has been much more defined than in his initial loan spell. A run of game and being given a certainty of what is expected from him – to play as the target-man – has seen Clarke-Harris put together his best run of form for the club. He is now an important player for the side and if he can be slightly more clinical in front of goal, he could make a real difference.
