Dropping into League Two provided a key juncture for Jonson Clarke-Harris in his career. After earning a move to Rotherham in the Championship having once been released from our academy, Clarke-Harris looked set for a big future in the game before he was derailed by a serious injury. Having done just about enough to earn a permanent stay with us following a loan spell last season, Clarke-Harris has the opportunity now to start to fulfill that potential he once showed.
Clarke-Harris is a striker who possesses all the necessary attributes to be a huge threat – strong, quick, aggressive and with a powerful shot with his left foot – however, three goals in 17 league appearances in League Two for us, also demonstrates that he isn’t yet the player he has occasionally threatened to be. The big question with Jonson Clarke-Harris is what role to play him get the best out of him. He can operate either as a target-man or someone who can make runs in behind, without excelling in either – he doesn’t dominate centre-backs, neither is he ultra-clinical in front of goal. There is a feeling that his recent long-term injury has limited his impact for us – although he did make some key contributions during the run-in last season – and that a full pre-season could be just what he needs. A fully firing Clarke-Harris played in the right role is someone who I suspect will score freely next season, it’s just whether that potential can be maximised.
