The forgotten man at Coventry City this season, it is a difficult situation to be in for Joel Latibeaudiere as the fourth-choice centre-back in a very settled defensive unit that has helped the team top the division. Theoretically, Latibeaudiere is also there to cover at right-back and central midfield but, in practice, the specialist back-up options in those positions are much preferred. It leaves the defender in a position where he will only play in case of extreme emergency – which has only happened once, during a flu epidemic – thus far this campaign.

Joel Latibeaudiere has ended up in this situation at Coventry City due to two full seasons of frustratingly inconsistent performances. Just when it’s looked like Latibeaudiere has found himself a niche in the side, he’ll lose his place after making silly, avoidable mistakes and that has eventually added up to him becoming a player that the manager does not want to take the risk of playing. He has been valued at times as something of a leader in the team, but with others stepping up into that role this season, Latibeaudiere has become increasingly less useful to Frank Lampard.

The reason why Joel Latibeaudiere is still around the Coventry City squad is that the club hasn’t been able to add another quality option in central defence to be comfortable moving him on. Unless something remarkable happens, the reality is that Latibeaudiere may well have already played his last game for the club – if not one of a handful of final appearances. While he has shown an impressive level of professionalism to stick around the first-team in order to be ready to be called upon, the greater evidence of Latibeaudiere’s time at the club is that he’s not quite of the level of quality the team needs.
