If Jodi Jones returns from his second serious injury in the space of two years as anything like the exciting and decisive presence that he was before, it will be a huge credit to both his physical and mental endeavour. It cannot be commented on what role Jones fulfills in the side going forward without considering the possibility, or perhaps the probability, that he may never return to being the player he once was. The kind of injuries that he has suffered have been career-ending for other players, even if there are examples of those who have bounced-back better.
In Jones’ favour is just how young he still is. At 21, he shouldn’t feel he has to rush himself back quicker than he needs to. Even though he is heading into the final year of his contract and there may be greater pressure on him now than there was 12 months ago to demonstrate that he can get back to full fitness – if not to stay with us, then to re-build his career at another club – the worst thing he could do is rush back. It is likely to be beyond the end of the coming season where we learn whether Jones is back to the level he was previously at, it would be one of the good news stories of the season were Jones to make a serious impact on our campaign.
