Our season looked to have ended one November Tuesday night in Hertfordshire when Jodi Jones fell victim to an ACL injury. Fortunately, for us, Jones’ injury seemed to be the catalyst for Marc McNulty, followed by Tom Bayliss, to step up as key figures for the side. The reason it seemed so impossible for us to recover from that injury to Jones though was because he was looking like the division’s stand-out performer with his electrifying wing play making him impossible to contain, while he was demonstrating a final product that the raw youngster Jones was when he first came to the club lacked.

There are two big challenges that face Jodi Jones heading into this season, the first is whether he can not only recover physically from the serious injury that he suffered but also whether he can return to the level of confidence and purpose he was showing for us. The second challenge though is, having won promotion without Jones for much of the season, how quickly can he be integrated into a side that has changed in emphasis from Jones’ dazzling wing play to a more direct one built around Marc McNulty and Maxime Biamou leading the line? Was it a coincidence that McNulty came into form after Jones’ injury? Or was it something fundamental about how the strengths of each player possibly clashed?
