For much of his time at Coventry City, Jay Dasilva’s performances have oscillated between unconvincing and untrustworthy. A constant weak link at left-back without the upside of having an impact going forward, the only thing preventing Dasilva from being a forgettable member of the squad was the amount of goals he was costing the team whenever he played. Within that context, Dasilva’s turnaround in form since the final month of last season has been remarkable, a true feat for both the coaching team and the player himself. Having returned this year in a similar vein of form, Dasilva is fast becoming one of Coventry’s most consistent performers.

Jay Dasilva’s biggest issue as a defender is the raw attribute that he can do little about, his height. Playing in a defensive position at his stature demands a high level of concentration and intensity, which sees Dasilva constantly targeted by opponents. The difference between his previous and current form has been in staying switched on much more consistently along with becoming tighter to his opposing winger and more aggressive in the challenge. Jay Dasilva has become a much more imposing presence at left-back, closing what had looked an open door at the back for Coventry City. The main area for improvement for Dasilva is going forward, where he has a tendency to play it safe in attacking areas rather than get balls into the box. Given his clear technical quality – which can be seen in how he can control the ball under pressure in the defensive third – it is a little frustrating that he is yet to make full use of that at the business end of the pitch.

What had looked a problem position for the team looks to have been solved by Jay Dasilva’s remarkable improvement in form over the last six months. However, there remains a worry that he is still liable to odd losses in concentration or being overpowered by physical opposing forwards which is why Dasilva will have to continue to demonstrate he can continue his current level of performance. What Dasilva’s turnaround in form highlights is how players can improve with the benefit of patience and a change of coaching staff. An important lesson that sometimes a problem can be solved by a player already in the building, rather than the transfer market.
