Having been one of the first names on the team-sheet last season, Jack Grimmer has been relegated largely to a back-up role in order to accommodate a talented loan signing. While there is little doubt now that Dujon Sterling is a better player than Jack Grimmer, it could put us in a situation this coming summer where we have to recruit two new first-team right-backs having lost Sterling at the end of his loan and Grimmer at the end of his contract. There is a risk and reward factor that comes with loan signings, they may improve your squad but it can set the team back over the longer-term if they arrive to stall the development of players under contract.
The question then is whether Jack Grimmer is a good enough player at League One level to have eschewed bringing in Dujon Sterling last summer. As reliable as he was last season in League Two, there were question marks over his position as a defender and his final product going forward. However, whenever he’s been used this season, he has been a solid presence defensively and provided decent attacking support. Even if he stays next year though, this looks set to be a wasted season from a personal perspective from Jack Grimmer at an age where he’s only going to improve by playing regular first-team football.
