The club’s record signing and at the start of his third season at the club, there remains a sense that Coventry City has yet to see the best of Haji Wright despite him being an impactful performer in his time thus far. The American can be frustrating and inconsistent but he has shown that his unorthodox style of play can be effective. The kind of player who can go from being unable to make a simple two-metre pass to beating two defenders and curling a shot past the goalkeeper, Wright’s unpredictability is what makes him so dangerous as a forward player. Now being trusted in his favoured position of centre-forward, the hope is that it will see Haji Wright further shave off the rough edges of his game and lead Coventry City to a successful season this time out.
A tall, quick and skilful forward player, Haji Wright has a lot of raw qualities in his favour but it his unpredictability that is his strongest quality and chaos where he thrives. Where Wright has struggled during his time at Coventry City is when he’s been asked to play in a disciplined, structured role, where he has to stay in a certain position rather than look for space. Wright revels when he has freedom to float around into dangerous attacking areas. That was why he initially excelled for the club when played off the left-wing, where he was free of the responsibilities that come with playing as a fixed centre-forward. Since being moved back to a central position under Frank Lampard, his best performances have come when the other attacking players have had the freedom to float from their starting roles to allow Wright to drop into pockets of space. As someone with physicality, pace and skill, Haji Wright can really catch defenders off-guard when he attacks areas he’s not expected to.
Backed by Frank Lampard to be the team’s first-choice centre-forward, it is up to Haji Wright to repay the faith the manager has put into him. For someone who excels when he can escape a level of responsibility, it is now up to Wright to learn how to perform when there’s pressure on him and conditions are against him. Whether it’s the trust Lampard is placing on him, freedom for injury or the desire to step up in a World Cup year for his national team, Wright has started the new season looking much more assertive and focused than he had for spells last year. Haji Wright has the opportunity to make this a very memorable campaign for both his team and himself personally, it’s up to him now to build on a positive start and unleash his full potential.
