Nearly 18 months and just over 10 games into his Coventry City career, it is hard to definitively assess Fabio Tavares. Those 11 league appearances Tavares has made for the club have constituted just 135 minutes, with his longest period on the pitch amount to just over half an hour. That goal against Preston North End last season in just his second appearance for the club was a sign of promise, but it was one of just the three shots Tavares has had in a Coventry City shirt.
Fabio Tavares’ primary asset is his pace, and it was apparent from his first minutes on the pitch at the club that his team-mates recognised what an asset that could be. Part of the reason why he has struggled to get efforts off on goal in the limited minutes he’s had at Coventry City is because he’s often had to play when the team is chasing a game against an opponent sitting deep, limited the room he’s had to harness his pace. As someone who is pretty slight physically and isn’t exceptionally skilful, Tavares has struggled to carve out room for himself against experienced Championship defenders – although, it is hard to definitively say given his lack of minutes.
In an ideal world, Mark Robins would probably have looked to have loaned Fabio Tavares out this summer, to allow him to build a head of steam as a regular player at a lower level. With four senior strikers ahead of him, all Tavares can do is try and make an impression with the scraps of football he is being handed. To move further up the pecking order, Tavares is going to have to prove that he is more of a goal threat than he has currently shown.
