The past 15 league games have seen Ephron Mason-Clark firmly settle into life at Coventry City and emerge as one of the team’s key difference makers. From looking like someone who was a little too eager to impress in his first appearances for the club, Mason-Clark benefitted from the absence of Haji Wright in order to start games regularly on the left of attack and get into a rhythm. He has now shown that he can both create and score on a reliable basis, and was someone whose recent absence from the starting line-up really was felt.
Ephron Mason-Clark has been the key beneficiary of Frank Lampard’s appointment as Coventry City manager. Lampard has stated that he likes his wide players to make runs in behind the opposition and attack the back post when the team is attacking down the other flank, Mason-Clark quickly adapted to those instructions – scoring in four out of seven of the new manager’s first games in charge. Ephron Mason-Clark who can really stretch teams with his runs in behind, while he also has the ability to beat defenders when afforded less space, it is that ability to act almost as an additional striker from a wide position where he has excelled in a Coventry City shirt.
With Haji Wright back fit, the question with Ephron Mason-Clark is whether there is a way for the two to operate in the same team – preferably with at least two out of Ellis Simms, Jack Rudoni and Tatsuhiro Sakamoto also on the pitch. Mason-Clark has been portrayed as someone who can only operate on the left wing, but it feels like that theory has only been tested out while he was still finding his way at a new club. The challenge for Ephron Mason-Clark going forward will be either to prove that he can make an impact on either flank, or excel to such a degree on his favoured left side that Frank Lampard’s plans centre on him being in that position.
