After making a handful of appearances in the opening weeks of the season, Dominic Hyam looked an unremarkable defender and there was little consternation about him being out of the first-team picture for the following months. However, a defensive injury crisis has thrust Hyam back into the spotlight at a key time of the season and he has more than held his own over the past couple of weeks.
When I first saw Hyam play, I thought he was someone with mistakes in his game and also lacked any raw physical or technical qualities – i.e. height or passing ability – that marked him out as someone who could develop into a good defender. However, he has been quietly impressive over the past couple of weeks, not doing anything flashy but winning most of his challenges and staying disciplined in his position. How long he holds onto his first-team place when Jordan Willis and Tom Davies are fit again remains to be seen, but Hyam has proved that he’s capable of being a first-team regular.
