What else is there to say about Dominic Hyam other than that he is a composed and reliable presence at the back?

Last season was a great leap forward for Hyam, who stepped up from being fourth-choice at centre-back to one of the first names of the team sheet. This season has perhaps been less spectacular in terms of his progress, but Hyam’s playing style is such that it can be hard to notice what he is doing well in an individual game until you realise how reliably he can repeat his level of performance over five, ten, twenty games and more.

The type of defender who rarely has to dive in to make big goal-saving tackles nor draws attention to himself by playing long, raking passes, Hyam is nonetheless one of our strongest individual defenders and is supremely composed on the ball. With the team playing a back three without a left-footed centre-back, it is no surprise that Mark Robins has handed the toughest role of playing on the left side of the back three to Hyam. At times, his natural right-sided tendency has seen him miss passes a left-footer would be looking for, Hyam’s defensive awareness and composure have meant we haven’t looked exposed on our left-side and allowed Sam McCallum to push forward with abandon.
