Signed in the midst of Michael Doyle’s departure, the addition of David Meyler to the squad on the final day of the January transfer window has gone somewhat under the radar. Perhaps the most surprising thing about David Meyler’s signing is that he is under 30, when the main assumption about him dropping down to League One would have been that he is over-the-hill and winding down his career. A player who was a regular in the Premier League two years ago, in theory, this is a pretty impressive signing to have pulled off.
There are probably two key reasons why David Meyler has joined Coventry City in League One. The first is that Reading appointed a new manager recently who prefers more technical, ball-playing central midfielders, the second is that he has suffered a fair few injuries over the past couple of years. Keeping Meyler fit could be a key concern for us for the remainder of the season. If we can, he should provide a sturdy, physical presence in midfield and possibly chip in with a goal or two. An upgrade on Michael Doyle, the success of this signing could be the difference between steadying the ship between now and the end of the season or getting sucked into the relegation scrap.
