An ex-Chelsea youngster, Charlie Wakefield’s signing is another indication of the impact of assistant manager Adi Viveash – a former Chelsea youth-team manager – on our recruitment policy, following on from the additions of Zain Westbrooke and Dujon Sterling. Little is known of Charlie Wakefield aside from clips on YouTube and the comments from Mark Robins on his signing. A loan move last season to Stevenage didn’t work out after Wakefield picked up a season-ending injury before he could get on the pitch, but he is someone who Championship clubs have seemingly been taken a look at – probably to boost their reserve squads.

Billed as an attack-minded winger who can also play at full-back, Wakefield’s lack of first-team experience would suggest that he is unlikely to be an immediate part of the first-team squad. The 18-month contract suggests that we’re taking an educated gamble on Wakefield, the next six months are to assess his fitness and ability with pre-season a chance for him to stake a claim for the space in the team set to be opened up by Luke Thomas’ return to Derby County. Having been part of one of the best academies in the country would suggest that Wakefield has reasonable pedigree, just what he can do at first-team level will be mystery until he eventually plays.
