After some shaky early appearances, Carl Rushworth has quickly shown at Coventry City just why the club were so eager to do a permanent deal for him over the summer despite already having a strong goalkeeper on the books. The Brighton & Hove Albion loanee has become an increasingly commanding presence between the sticks, having developed an understanding with the centre-backs in front of him. Looking like someone who can pull off big saves, even in games where he has little else to do and could lose concentration in, Rushworth has been a key area of improvement for the team this campaign and why thy have started so strongly.
Carl Rushworth was billed on his arrival at Coventry City as a goalkeeper who was first and foremost a strong shot-stopper and that’s what he’s proved to be. After a slow start, where he seemed to let one or two soft goals go past him, Rushworth’s ability to pull off saves that many other goalkeepers wouldn’t has seen him win buy-in from his team-mates and Coventry fans who had previously been left a little cold. His biggest area of weakness had looked to be his ability to claim crosses but that seems to have improved recently as he’s developed an understanding with his defence, albeit, it arguably hasn’t been truly tested yet. At the moment, Rushworth’s kicking is under the spotlight, where he has a habit of going for distance over accuracy, which is possibly down to the team trying to utilise the power he can get on kicks as a way to play over the top of opponents. If he can dial it in, Rushworth’s kicking could quickly become a real weapon for the Sky Blues to make use of.
The early judgements of Carl Rushworth were always unfair, as it takes far more time to judge a goalkeeper than any other position on the pitch due to how much their role is affected by their team-mates. As impressive as Rushworth has been more recently, it’s probably only the Leicester City away game where he was put under pressure to perform. If Coventry City continue to score at the rate they do this season, then Rushworth’s role will continue to be minimal. Nonetheless, it is pleasing to see the goalkeeper make big saves when called upon, which has added a degree of comfort to the team’s recent performances. There will be bigger tests to come but the indication thus far is that Carl Rushworth has enough about him to perform under greater pressure than he’s currently under.
