If there had been doubts about Coventry City’s ambitions in the summer transfer window, another club-record smashing signing is an emphatic answer to anyone confusing lack of activity with lack of intent. The Ghana international midfielder, Caleb Yirenkyi, arrives at the club as one of the top prospects in his position in world football. Someone who has starred in the Danish top-flight and for his national team, Yirenkyi looks to be a real coup of an addition for Coventry City, underlining the position of strength the club finds itself in ahead of its return to the Premier League.
Importantly, Caleb Yirenkyi addresses a key area of weakness for the Sky Blues that had been a concern heading into the new campaign, physicality in the centre of the park. While Frank Onyeka has made a positive impression in that regard, Yirenkyi looks to be operating on a higher-level entirely, capable of preventing the Coventry getting overwhelmed in the centre of the park and able to impose their style of play on opposing teams. While it will be a step up for Caleb Yirenkyi going from the Danish top-flight to the English top-flight, every indication is that he is more than ready to make that step up and has a long future at the top of the game ahead of him. Yirenkyi is the kind of addition that has been made with an eye on being a Premier League club over the long term, as someone who can addresses some immediate needs to help ensure survival but who can grow as the club looks to become a staple of the top-flight. This looks to be a signing to get excited about, proving that Coventry City aren’t in this division just to make up the numbers and collect a fat TV cheque in the process.
