Starting to discover some consistency in a Coventry City shirt after a first season with the club marked by some high highs and low lows, Ephron Mason-Clark’s importance to the team continues to grow. It took a while for Mason-Clark to get going last year, with the wait between his signing and first appearance adding a level of expectation he wasn’t quite ready to shoulder, but he eventually showed he can be a match-winner at Championship level. This season, Mason-Clark has been more consistent and has recently found an end product to go with his performance levels and is becoming increasingly leaned on as the team’s go-to outlet in the final third.
As a winger, Ephron Mason-Clark isn’t quite the style of player who will carry the ball from deep and beat defenders for both skill and pace. Instead, Mason-Clark’s game is based around playing high up the pitch, timing runs to get in behind opposing defenders and then cutting inside to produce a final pass or shot on goal. On top of that, Mason-Clark has the physical build to be able to win and hold onto the ball under contact. At his best, Mason-Clark can really stretch opposing teams and force them to keep a defender back to try and limit his threat. At his worst, he remains a reliable outlet to bring the ball into the final third, however, he has a tendency to take extra touches which allows opposing defences time to get back in position after his bursts in behind.
A recent burst of goals and assists for Ephron Mason-Clark has been just reward for his efforts over the course of this season. Mason-Clark is the type of player who will keep plugging away in a game until he finds success, which is perhaps why he has looked one of Coventry City’s better players during a recent downturn in form. It is when things aren’t going well that a player’s character and ability can be truly judged, Ephron Mason-Clark has shown some impressive qualities in those regards of late. If the rest of the team can rediscover their mojo, Mason-Clark could be set for a standout second half of the campaign.
