After signing in January and staying out on loan at Peterborough United for the rest of the previous season, there was a level of pressure on Ephron Mason-Clark’s shoulders to make the wait worth it. The winger has struggled to get going in Sky Blue in his early appearances, unable to nail down a spot in the side and probably trying a bit too hard whenever he’s had opportunities to impress. Mason-Clark has shown moments where he’s looked capable of being a potential difference maker for Coventry City, but he has yet to produce anything to command greater minutes in which to make an impact.

Perhaps it hasn’t helped Ephron Mason-Clark that he prefers to play on the left wing and cut inside, which has left him competing for a starting spot with the team’s most effective attacking player, Haji Wright. However, given that he has shown an equal preference for cutting inside when playing on the right, it highlights that chopping inwards and looking to get shots off is simply an intrinsic part of Mason-Clark’s game. Thus far, that has served to make him a frustrating and selfish-looking player, but his ability to create space for himself and get shots away looks pretty reliable and offers something a little different to the current collection of Coventry City attacking players.

If Ephron Mason-Clark can get that first goal under his belt soon, that confidence boost could completely transform the perception of him. Currently, it has looked a little too individualistic, perhaps searching for that first goal. If he can stop striving for that kind of impact and relax a little, Mason-Clark has the ability to be a difference-maker who can create space in the final third for both himself and his team-mates. Ephron Mason-Clark isn’t too far away from being the impact player he is capable of being for Coventry City, he just needs to calm down a little and perhaps also benefit from luck falling in his favour.
